ITEM NUMBER THIRTY-four: Get a meaningful tattoo. I dreaded this activity the most, but regardless I had all the best intentions to follow through on it. I did my research and found a tattoo parlor that wouldn’t give me an infectious disease, or at least they were not known for giving out infectious diseases as a parting gift. The internet ratings were high, and if the internet says so then get a tattoo. Actually, that doesn’t sound like the best logic.

“What does it feel like?” I asked Carly for some first hand experience as we drove from the beach to the parlor.

“Well your first time...” she began but I cut her off.

“I’m talking about the tattoo.” She looked disappointed as if I had interrupted what was going to be the best joke ever told. Her face dropped into a deep frown, and she made the noise she used to make when Mom took away one of her possessions as a punishment to a “smart aleck comment.” It sounded like a whimpering ‘hum.’ “What does getting a tattoo feel like?”

“It’s not that bad,” she said in a mockingly reassuring voice. “People are whiners. It feels like a baby kitten’s soft, fluffy paw rubbing up against you.” She smirked an evil, squinty-eyed smirk, and I knew she was lying.

Despite the threat of imminent pain before me, I stepped out of the car with sand in my shoes, and everywhere else, from our beach picnic and walked toward the parlor door with Carly giggling with giddiness at my side.

“How about an ‘I heart mom’ on your shoulder or barbed wire. Please pick barbed wire. Please.” She put her hands together and actually pleaded. She would have dropped to her knees begging if we were not walking across the parking lot.

The bell above the door chimed as we walked in and my eyes widened in astonishment. A woman was laying facedown while the tattoo artist, who proudly displayed her creations on every square centimeter of her own skin, colored in a giant tiger on the woman’s back. The tail went down her leg and wrapped around her thigh, and a massive front paw was drawn on each shoulder, claws out like it was attacking her. Above the claws, scratch marks were drown to show where the tiger had already sunk its claws into her, and the tiger’s face, revealing bloody teeth, started on the woman’s back and ended on her neck just below her hairline.

“We’ll have the same,” said Carly behind me. I elbowed her in the gut, and she bent a little in pain. In order to get
